In the present paper the identification of the damage which may occur in the life of a brittle twodimensional (2D) solid is examined by means of an inverse analysis. The damaged area is identified by minimising the error between numerical results and experimental results of some static load tests. Some design variables are introduced in order to describe the shape of the damaged area and the value of the damage in some key points.
