Abstract
The concept of varietas, present since ancient times in literature and rhetoric, became a fundamental theoretical and operational reference point in the fields of art and architecture in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. In construction practice, interest in the manifold variety expressed by ancient models, together with the memory of late Gothic decorative richness, determined a trend in taste that, from the 15th century onwards, ran throughout the entire Renaissance. The essays collected in this volume, the result and elaboration of the contributions presented at the conference held in Ferrara on 20 and 21 March 2024, investigate some of the many aspects of the taste for varietas in architecture and architectural decoration. The studies analyse a number of case studies from Ferrara and other centres in Italy and France, selected because they are significant in terms of comparable situations, but at the same time different in terms of historical and geographical context and the resulting formal expressions, outlining the events of different styles and different Renaissances.I documenti in SFERA sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
