This research aimed to investigate the role of the visual mediators and routine in students’ strategies. The same task was presented in different ways: with a graphical representation and with an algebraic representation. This modality allowed an analysis of the presence of different strategies activated by the students depending on the proposed stimulus. The collected data were analysed with the theoretical framework of management of representation and the commognition theory of Sfard. Through these lenses it was possible to investigate students’ strategies and to make reflections on the influence of stimulus representations and teaching practices in choosing strategies, focusing on the presence of graphical representation and on the routines activated.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the role of the visual mediators and routine in students’ strategies. The same task was presented in different ways: with a graphical representation and with an algebraic representation. This modality allowed an analysis of the presence of different strategies activated by the students depending on the proposed stimulus. The collected data were analysed with the theoretical framework of management of representation and the commognition theory of Sfard. Through these lenses it was possible to investigate students’ strategies and to make reflections on the influence of stimulus representations and teaching practices in choosing strategies, focusing on the presence of graphical representation and on the routines activated.
