We investigate the photocatalytic properties of cadmium sulfide (CdS) based materials for the reductive hydrogenation N=N bonds in azo dyes. Band gap (2.4eV) and band energetics of CdS are suitable for its use in reductive processes under visible light. CdS based materials, prepared by hydrothermal method, are more active than commercial CdS. ESI-MS analysis shows that after N=N cleavage, the two aminic fragments are formed: in particular, sulfanilic acid can be recovered and recycled in the synthesis of fresh azo dyes, so transforming a waste into a useful product.

Abstract
We investigate the photocatalytic properties of cadmium sulfide (CdS) based materials for the reductive hydrogenation N=N bonds in azo dyes. Band gap (2.4eV) and band energetics of CdS are suitable for its use in reductive processes under visible light. CdS based materials, prepared by hydrothermal method, are more active than commercial CdS. ESI-MS analysis shows that after N=N cleavage, the two aminic fragments are formed: in particular, sulfanilic acid can be recovered and recycled in the synthesis of fresh azo dyes, so transforming a waste into a useful product.File in questo prodotto:
