From the middle of the Nineteenth century the foreigners, in particular from English and German speaking countries, turned their attention to architectural terracotta patterns of Italian cities, especially in the Pianura Padana. The Ferrara architectural terracottas were portrayed in albums of distinctive travellers, as Runge (1846 and 1852) and Strack (1889), with accurate surveys proposed in a comparative form for reproduction. A new awareness begins to make headway toward an aspect that is increasingly recognized as an identifying feature of a city. The British Noyes sisters illustrated the history of Ferrara (1904) with decorative details of terracottas. These printed references address the volumes of Righini dedicated to Quello che resta di Ferrara antica (1910-1912), the point of reference in a systematic analysis of the terracotta patterns, which impacts on the protection actions of significant heritage and its restoration. The gaze from travellers/foreign architects contributes to this process.

Abstract
The gaze from travellers/foreign architects contributes to this process.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
