This essay focuses on two of the most important novels by José Martínez Ruiz: Diario de un enfermo (1901) and La voluntad (1902). The main aim is to analyse similarities and differences existing between the two texts in order to show two kinds of relationship: the one between La voluntad and Diario and the one between the latter and Spanish Modernism. For this purpose, I will proceed with a formal, ideological and content comparison between the two novels.
