This question, which often comes in when discussing solar neutrinos, is not clearly analysed in any textbook, to the authors' knowledge. In this note the authors give a simple estimate of the flow time, also considering its (ir)relevance to the solar neutrino problem. Most of the time is spent flowing from the energy production region, say R ≤ Re = 0.2 Rsun, to the bottom of the convective envelope, located at Rb = 0.7 Rsun, as radiative transfer is much less efficient than the convective one.

How long does it take for heat to flow through the sun?

Abstract

This question, which often comes in when discussing solar neutrinos, is not clearly analysed in any textbook, to the authors' knowledge. In this note the authors give a simple estimate of the flow time, also considering its (ir)relevance to the solar neutrino problem. Most of the time is spent flowing from the energy production region, say R ≤ Re = 0.2 Rsun, to the bottom of the convective envelope, located at Rb = 0.7 Rsun, as radiative transfer is much less efficient than the convective one.
