Suburban building estates make up more than 50% of all European building stock. For each country, this represents a substantial fraction of the total value of the housing stock. These urban areas are primarily residential and are home to a large part of the population. Beyond differences in the ways in which governments have handled the development and transformation of the cities and the land, the common characteristic of all suburban areas – and in particular those suburbs of medium to large cities – is lower quality of life; and in many cases, widespread social unrest. A COST Action, funded by the European Science Foundation and chaired by Roberto Di Giulio, has been developed for the comparison and dissemination of knowledge and tools to assess and promote the refurbishment of existing suburban building stocks. The final results of the research carried out by the COST Action TU0701 in this field, have been collected in two volumes both titled “Improving the Quality of Suburban Building Stock”. The first one has been published in 2010 and presented at the COST Action TU0701 Mid Term Conference in Malta; this second volume completes the presentation of the work done and reports the results achieved related to the objectives of the Action.
