The BITS index, a benthic index based on taxonomic sufficiency, was calculated at 4 sites in the Sacca di Goro and in the Lesina Lagoon (Adriatic Sea) and compared with sediment and water parameters. A significant positive correlation was found between BITS values and water dissolved oxygen, while significant negative correlations were detected between BITS and ammonia and phosphorous in the water, and sulfides in the sediments. Although not significant, negative correlations were observed with all the other sedimentary parameters measured.
