In this paper, we present some general considerations together with qualitative estimations on the application field of aluminum space frame structures, as a sound alternative to traditional structures for the design of large span roofs. The study of this widespread structural system with its peculiar characteristics enables us to focus on some basic concepts, which can allow an optimized design while maintaining an high overall safety. First of all, some experimental results are considered; then, the safety checks for the design of any given aluminum structure are shown, according to both Italian and European building codes. Finally, the results of the optimization study are shown with relation to some relevant space frame structural topologies.
