Abstract

W-SAHaRA was an EU Consortium aiming to develop guidelines for predicting the extent of drinking wells protection region in natural heterogeneous formations and assessing the associated prediction errors in a probabilistic framewrok. The 9 teams in the Consortium were from 6 different European countries and include a mixture of Academia, Industry and Public Administration. They include innovate researchers of the highest calibre who conducted most of the outstanding research in the field. The project funded by the European Commission within the Fifth Framework Programme. As technical team leader in a dedicated workgroup (WP14), Michele Bottarelli implemented a three-dimensional groundwater model of the Reno multiacquifer system (Bologna, Italy), evaluating the capture zones around local drinking wells. The reasearch produced a novel methodolgy for the geological structure transposition in a deterministic multilayer model.
