1. 1. Homing pigeons housed in Florence have been released from increasing distances (up to about 700km north) to determine the spatial range of their navigational system. 2. 2. To test the role of olfactory stimuli perceived during the outward journey, some pigeons were prevented from smelling during transportation to the release site. Birds permanently deprived of olfaction were also released. 3. 3. The results indicate that, to steer home, the Florentine birds can rely on local olfactory cues up to at least 60 km north of the Alps (490 km from home). Beyond this area, pigeons were not homeward oriented unless they had access to olfactory cues during transportation to the release site. © 1983.

Abstract
