The paper gives an overview of the work done during the COST C16 Action in the Workig Group 1, that worked on the state of the art of buildings in Europe. In this paper, the summarization and the comaparation between the 15 countries partecipating in COST C16 action was done. In the first part, an overwiew of the state of the art of main typologies of buildings and dwellings, main technologies, techniques and materials was done. In the second part, the main factors of building decay were analyzed: phisical aspects (protection against mosture, thermal insulation, noise insulation), structural aspects, functional aspects (accessibility, safety), and architectural aspects.
