The paper is an introduction to the volume 2 of the "state of the art" of urban building envelopes in Europe. The book is the first of a series of four books, and it contains contributions from 15 European countries, representing a total of 315.5 million inhabitants. The total number of dwellings in these 15 countries amounts to almost 130 million. The introduction of the book gives a Europe-wide inventory of the qualities and the shortcomings of the post-war apartment stock mainly explaining the work done during the four years of the research.
