The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible influences of acute sublingual administration of nifedipine on blood glucose and one some of its regulating hormones, in healthy subjects. Seven healthy male subjects, with no personal or family history of diabetes mellitus and weighing not more than 20% above their ideal body weight, were studied. They were monitored for blood glucose, insulin, adrenocorticotropic hormone, cortisol, and prolactin, at times 0, 30, 60, 120, 180, and 240 minutes: at time 0, five subjects received 20 mg of sublingual nifedipine, while two received an equal dose of placebo. All subjects were also monitored for heart rate and blood pressure using a protable noninvasive automatic device. The hormonal parameters did not show any modification; blood glucose presented a slight, but significant increase, when compared with placebo, 30 to 60 minutes after drug administration.
