The results of two centrifuge load tests on close-ended and free-headed pile models subjected to compression, have been analysed to asses the effects of the residual stresses on the shaft resistance. Displacement and non-displacement (ideally bored) pile models with rough shaft, were instrumented with four internal loading cells and were embedded into a very fine dry silica powder reconstituted to a selected void ratio. Positive or negative residual stresses, measured before the loading test, affect the loading transfer mechanism at the pile soil interface. The paper reports a brief description of the experimental set-up and the procedure adopted to account for such effects in centrifuge tests.
