The literature reports various cases of organic compounds which may behave as inhibitors or stimulators of the acid corrosion of iron, by diminishing their concentration. Nevertheless, systematic researches on this problems are scarce. In this paper, in order to verify if the quoted phenomenon is generalizable, the influence of different organic substances on the corrosion of Armco iron in 1 N H2SO4 solution has been studied. Organic compounds of different molecular structure and stability (nitrile, azole and triazole derivatives) have been considered. To determine the influence of the concentration of the additives, spectrophotometric and gravimetric measurements of iron corrosion rates in a wide range of additive concentration have been performed. The recording of the polarization curves at different potential sweep rate allowed us to emphasize the action exerted by the various compounds on the anodic and cathodic partial processes, in different experimental conditions. An attempt has been made to interprete the behaviour of the examined substances as a function of their concentration in the acid solutions.
