The application of a scratching electrode technique has been developed to obtain further information on the inhibition mechanism of organic compounds in relation to the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of austenitic stainless steels in boiling magnesium chloride solutions, as well as in 2 M HCl and in 2.5 M H2SO4 + 0.5 M NaCl solutions. The experimental decay currents were recorded by a storage oscilloscope and successively analyzed by a computer. The inhibitors efficient towards SCC very quickly restored the initial surface conditions in scratching tests. The mechanism of SCC inhibition is discussed.
