The interaction between Co(sep)3+ and S2O2-3 ions has been investigated by various methods. The interpretation of the results in terms of ion association requires the assumption of the formation of ion pairs, triplets and probably higher aggregates as well. The agreement between the association constants, β1 and β2, obtained by spectrophotometry and by solubility is reasonable for β1 (ion pairs) but not for β2 (ion triplets). Only the order of magnitude of β2 is the same in the two methods. Both spectrophotometric and solubility results indicate that SO2-4 associates with Co(sep)3+ approximately to the same extent as S2O2-3, but consistent results for the association constants could not be obtained.
