This paper, after an introduction of anatomical and phisiopathological considerations on peritoneum, reports initial results regarding an experimental study undertaken to verify effectiveness and right performances of postoperatory peritoneal lavage (p.p.l.). The AA. infected 30 rabbits (group A including 10 animals without p.p.l.; group B including 20 animals with p.p.l.). with 1 ml of E. coli (50 billions of germs) diluited in Hb and saline solution. In group A 7/20 rabbits died within one week, in group B 18/20 rabbits survived one month and check of VES, rectal temperature, W.B.C. count and performance status (through an original value scale set up by Authors) confirmed the great effectiveness of p.p.l. The AA in further researches will better point out the method and the use of different substances, either primary (fluids) and secondary (antiseptics, antibiotics), in order to investigate the rightest way to perform peritoneal lavage.
