Despite the advances in separation and detection techniques, sample processing is still the basis for chemical analyses, in which effective sample extraction and clean-up are necessary to achieve reliable results. Indeed, sample preparation is the critical step before analysis as it can significantly affect selectivity, sensitivity, and reproducibility. Abstract

Generic sample preparation protocols are lacking in this fast-growing analytical field, and a fine balance must be tuned between ensuring elimination of interferences and not excluding chemical domains from the analysis. This chapter will give insights into the evaluation of sample preparation approaches suitable for analysis of volatile and semivolatile compounds.
