The article presents the results of research on the attitudes of education science students towards the use of AI in educational contexts with people with disabilities. The investigation aims to help fill the gap identified in the scientific literature, which has not yet explored the attitudes of future socio-pedagogical professional educators or their training needs in this area. Methods The research focuses on how participants perceive AI in educational contexts involving people with disabilities, examining their knowledge, experiences, evaluations, behavioral intentions, and emotions. The pre-experimental methodology involved administering an open-ended questionnaire divided into two sections, which were interspersed with the viewing of a video on the ‘Horizon Insension’ project, aiming to test AI-based systems for the inclusion of individuals with intellectual and multiple disabilities. The questionnaire was completed sequentially, with each section filled out immediately after the previous one. The respondents are students of education science from the University of Ferrara. The thematic analysis of the data was supported by MAXQDA software. Results This contribution presents the results of the first section of the questionnaire. The potential role of AI in educational interventions with people with disabilities is mainly grasped through simple conceptual frameworks. However, a minority of participants elaborate more complex and potentially more conscious representations. Conclusions The results indicate a significant training need that cannot be limited to the technical aspect. Training must be firmly grounded in pedagogy and the humanities, reasserting the capacity for critical analysis as a crucial competency, whether or not it involves the use of AI.
Background.
