Las traducciones italianas de Un pobre hombre rico de Miguel de Unamuno: viejas y nuevas propuestas [Miguel de Unamuno’s Un pobre hombre rico and its Italian Translations: Old and New Proposals]

Not only did Unamuno pursue fame in Spain, but he also aimed to reach the widest international readership possible. He established deep relationships with Italy, since Gilberto Beccari became in 1908 his main Italian translator. Starting from a review of the «transalpine milestones» of the former rector of the University of Salamanca, this essay aims to analyse one of his last short novels (or large stories): Un pobre hombre rico o El sentimiento cómico de la vida. Printed in 1933 in the volume San Manuel Bueno, mártir y tres historias más, it achieved poor success in and out of Spain. Considered as a late example of Unamuno’s linguistic experimentalism (characterised by plenty of double meanings, burlesque affixes and puns), its translation is far from being easy. For this reason, I have compared the Italian translations provided by Bianco (2010) and Fioraso (2022), offering also some lexical and grammatical alternatives.
