This paper aims to highlight the correspondence between Schol. Thuc. 8,44,2 Κάμιρος Ἡρωδιανὸς καὶ Χοιροβοσκός and Schol. Hdt. 1,144,3 as transmitted in Angel. gr. 83 (B). Additionally, by examining comparable references in lexicographical and grammatical works, the paper advances a conjecture about a probable common source for the scholia of the two historians: a lost witness to the epitome of Stephanus of Byzantium’s Ethnica.

Abstract

This paper aims to highlight the correspondence between Schol. Thuc. 8,44,2 Κάμιρος Ἡρωδιανὸς καὶ Χοιροβοσκός and Schol. Hdt. 1,144,3 as transmitted in Angel. gr. 83 (B). Additionally, by examining comparable references in lexicographical and grammatical works, the paper advances a conjecture about a probable common source for the scholia of the two historians: a lost witness to the epitome of Stephanus of Byzantium’s Ethnica.
