The article is a report of the workshop organized during Tirana Architecture Week during October 2022. The workshop consisted in a critical and visual laboratory to interpret skyscrapers through specifc historical, architectural and spatial paradigms. The skyscraper was explored through a critical analysis of relevant texts and design examples which had a great impact on its spread as an architectural type. Particularly signifcant Italian case-studies from the Second Post-War period – such as the Velasca and Pirelli towers in Milan – were analyzed to explain skyscrapers as a phenomenon which characterized the vertical growth of cities and parts of them. The study highlighted the main features of the high-rise and the intrinsic connections between its elements and parts; attention was also paid on the relationships that the tall building established with the city and the urban landscape. The focus was therefore on the impact that skyscrapers have had on the transformation of cities and the understanding of their role in the contemporary city. The historical and visual exploration was followed by the critical reading of selected excerpts from relevant texts from the history and theory of architecture. The fnal result was a visual and narrative investigation on the Skyscraper through texts and diagrams. Abstract

The main objectives of this laboratory were: • To explore the complexity of the skyscraper as architectural and urban phenomenon in the modern and conTheory of Architecture for Towers ALESSANDRA COMO University of Salerno LUISA SMERAGLIUOLO PERROTTA University of Salerno SIMONA TALENTI University of Salerno ANNARITA TEODOSIO University of Salerno MARSELA PLYKU DEMAJ POLIS University Workshop Reports Workshop Reports temporary city; • To develop visual tools to analyze and explain the main characteristics of the skyscraper from a typological point of view; • To experience a comparative reading of texts and images/drawings in order to create a bridge between history, theory and design; • To explore comparison as a method to analyze the experience of the space in the city.
