The article analyses the traits that are peculiar to Luigi Da Porto’s novella of Giulietta and Romeo, highlighting that, if compared with Bandello’s more successful version, it is based on a meaningful interplay of silence and simulation which influences all the characters. In this way, Da Porto’s story proves to be a tragedy of appearance and denied communication. Furthermore, this article shows that the peculiarities of Da Porto’s novella lead to the identification of a specific ‘Veneto’ tradition of the Veronese lovers’ story, which is not only anchored in the fifteenth-century local novella, represented by the "Refugio de’ miseri", but involves also other genres, from the poem in ‘ottave’ (Gherardo Boldieri’s "L’infelice amore dei due fedelissimi amanti Giulia e Romeo") to the tragedy (Luigi Groto’s "Adriana").
