Data on air quality and greenery are reported and discussed here, of a dense urban area in Tirana center (48 ha; 11,000 inhabitants), part of administrative units 9 and 10. Air quality was measured at 22 stations in May 2019 (air pollution) and February 2020 (noise). During December 2018-August 2020, green area in the public space was assessed; trees and shrubs over 1 m were counted and mapped; the tree age and the main services the trees provide for mitigation of pollution are defined; some of ecosystem services, such as O2 emission, CO2 fixation and energy saving kWh, are calculated in monetary value (ALL) through the "National Tree Benefit Calculator". The data were digitized in Geographic Infomation System (GIS). The average of 22 measurements for air quality parameters exceeds the norms of the Albanian standard: PM2.5, 29 μg/m3 (16% above Stash); PM10, 62.2 μg/m3 (4%); CO2, 475.7mg/l (36%); NO2 125.7 μg/m3 (214%). 276 plant species were found in the area; 88 were trees and shrubs more than 1 m tall, 2,365 trees in total, represented mainly by littleleaf linden, broad-leaf privet, box elder, evergreen oak, Oriental plane, Oriental thuja, etc. The average tree age was about 25 years and the height 7.15 m. The total green area is about 13,500 m2 (2.81% of the whole zone), or about 1.23 m2/inhabitant; compared to yr. 2007 the green area was decreased by 8,690 m2 (39%). Although sporadic, our data can be a strong signal about situation today in urban Tirana, contrary with what is officially reported. The continous knowledge of the situation is highly recomended; moreover, it is highly recomended taking care of the existing green spaces, greening preferably with native plants. The data here are part of the EU project 'Green Lungs for our cities', implemented by Co-PLAN, as an alternative monitoring option.
