The book retraces the history of the formation of a unique exhibition enclosure such as the Giardini della Biennale di Venezia where, since 1887, the exhibition pavilions of Italy and foreign countries, often designed by important Italian and foreign architects, have sprung up to host international art and architecture exhibitions. The introduction traces the evolution of the site in relation to the changing concept of the exhibition pavilion. The design and construction history of each pavilion is reconstructed, with a description of the author of the work. Period Iconography. The volume has been updated with respect to the 2014 edition and expanded with the documentation of the "Vatican Chapels" pavilion built in 2018 on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore.
