Technology is a pivotal asset to fully embrace sustainability. The paper provides insights over the digital readiness of the Italian fashion companies to embrace the green transition. In an exploratory ethos and by relying on qualitative inductive research, the study investigates 48 fashion companies. By reconciling several theoretical lenses (i.e., digital readiness, sustainability and circular economy) into a systemic conceptual framework, the paper uncovers the underlying dynamics of the green transition by also unpacking the relevant dimensions that were leveraged by the companies. The findings highlight how the Italian fashion companies tend to have significantly different approaches towards embracing digitalization that lend themselves to be captured in a taxonomy. The paper makes an original contribution to the literature on sustainability, by also addressing the relevant managerial recommendations that stem from the findings. Limitations and directions for future research are also discussed in the last section of the paper.
