The aim of this explorative study is to provide a systematic mapping of the most innovative firms in Europe, in order to identify their distinctive local innovation dynamics in terms of geographical, sectoral and cultural distribution. The research seeks to assess whether innovation performance in Europe is “culture-specific”. To this end, data collection mainly relied on three sources: the world's 142 countries ranked by the Global Innovation Index Report (2013), The 2013 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard and the GLOBE survey. From the findings, it emerges that while the most innovative countries are Sweden, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland, the largest number of innovative firms tend to be located in the UK, Germany and France. The most innovative sectors are Industrial Engineering, Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology, Software & Computer Services. The most innovative clusters are the Germanic Cluster, the Anglo cluster and Latin Europe which supports the idea that innovation performance is indeed “culture-specific”. In particular, from the analysis it emerges that these clusters tend to have very distinctive institutional environments tend to favour very different dynamics of local innovation and also shape the geographical distribution of their firm’innovation performance.
