The water-based coatings have gained significant interest during time, indeed they have been considered a valid alternative to the commonly used solvent-borne coating systems due to their safety in application. Herein, an efficient and innovative methodology for the preparation of water-based dispersions of a biodegradable polyesters, such as poly(lactic acid) for coating purposes is presented. Dispersions with polymer contents around 20 %, biobased content higher than 85 % and particles size in the 200 - 500 nm range were obtained. Formulations with xanthan gum as thickener were successfully coated onto a paper substrate providing excellent barrier properties to liquid water (permeability to liquid water of 6 g/m2).
