Vulnerability is a key concept in contemporary debate. The notion has been tackled from multiple and different perspectives. It refers to a more general reflection on the fragility as a permanent condition of human beings. Vulnerability is used as an entry point for discussing inequalities, discriminations, adversities of some kind. It carries with it the imminent or ever present possibility of harm and injury. It is an interpretative category that deals with the question of identifying and protecting individuals or groups particularly exposed because of physical, economic, social, political reasons. Vulnerability is an inescapable dimension of the life of individuals and the shaping of human relationships, and may therefore boost awareness of a common responsibility that requires institutional commitments.
