The thesis "Salinas de Guaranda: is a cross-cultural journey towards an alternative to development" aims to avoid the mis-concept of a naive and simplified reading of a much more complex and articulated worldview than the Spanish translation of “buen vivir or vivir bien” (good living or a life well lived). A concept that are respectively introduced in the Constitution of Ecuador since 2008 and in Bolivia since 2009. This objective is achieved through a reflection on “Sumak Kawsay” and on the historical evolution of the concept of development. Which is being achieved by tracing the path of thirty local communities from Salinas de Guaranda which have based themselves on an economy structure focused on cooperation and solidarity. Father Antonio, is the mentor and mediator of this process, he himself has been defined as a model of community economy, therefore, reaffirming his role-played creation of such economy by the communities and their ancestral values. With the use of qualitative (SWOT analysis) and quantitative methods, the different stages of this path and the main factors that have allowed to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants in this region at the foot of the Chimborazo are analyzed. This is a multidimensional and dynamic - subject to constant evolution. The analysis reveals non-homogeneous results of the socio-economic development process in Salinas de Guaranda, highlighting a clear difference primarily between the rural and urban areas. As a result, the diversity and its main socio-cultural causes are in need to be examined. The theoretical approaches that have emerged and the evidence of the case study will confirm whether the socio-economic transformations achieved in rural communities have placed life or like referred to by the locals: “kawsay, qamaña”, in its entirety as the basic principle of development. Not only relating it to human beings, animals and plants, but also to earth, space and time, as the natives put it “Pacha”. The study is set up following the criteria of an intercultural, inter-biotic and inter-generational co-existence. Life is therefore, considered as the result of an harmonious exchange between all beings, where man is not seen as a producer but as a protector, whom does not pursue wealth or power, but a life in harmony with other beings, including those considered by Westerners to be in-animate / phantom. A concept of development that is oriented towards a community and not individualism, but above all a development capable of promoting constant respect for the common home, which is mother earth, or as referred to by the locals “Pacha”. In light of these conventions and life style, it is good to emphasize that the indigenous people of the Andes rarely measure progress on the basis of the GDP, but rather according to the happiness, community celebrations, diversity, spirituality, resulting in an approach which is adopted and at the same time examined in this study.
