A Michelangelesque Self-Portrait. Benvenuto Cellini and the Construction of a ‘Double Talent’ · The essay focuses on Benvenuto Cellini’s creation of a literary self-portrait as a ‘double talent’ in his autobiography and poems. Most clearly in the Vita, this deliberate creation of a public image that highlights the roles of both sculptor and poet is essentially shaped by the reference to a crucial model to many Florentine artists, namely the ‘divine Michelangelo’. What Cellini presents as Buonarroti’s teaching thus becomes the key to understanding Cellini’s strategies of self-fashioning, whose ultimate aim is to overcome the unreachable master. In this process of competitive emulation an important role is played by another Tuscan idol, who had in turn been a model for Michelangelo himself, namely Dante Alighieri. The joint imitation of the two great masters thus characterises how Cellini describes his slow but successful metamorphosis from a mere goldsmith to a refined sculptor and skilled poet.

Abstract
The joint imitation of the two great masters thus characterises how Cellini describes his slow but successful metamorphosis from a mere goldsmith to a refined sculptor and skilled poet.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
