A bi-coordinated silver (I) complex has antimicrobial activity and general formula Na+ 2[Ag+(L2-)(M2-)], wherein L is a ligand consisting of 2-mercaptobenzoic acid and M is a ligand different from said ligand L and consisting of 2-hydroxybenzoic acid, said complex being incorporable in a hyaluronic acid composition in a stable manner. A hyaluronic acid composition contains a mono-coordinated silver (I) complex and is usable as medicament having antimicrobial activity, said mono-coordinated silver (I) complex having antimicrobial activity and general formula: Na+ [Ag+ (L2-)], wherein L is a ligand selected from the group consisting of: 4-mercaptobenzoic acid, 3-mercaptobenzoic acid, 2-mercaptobenzoic acid and 4-mercaptophenylacetic acid. The aforesaid complexes, which are provided with antimicrobial activity, enable stable solutions or suspensions of sodium hyaluronate in water to be made and are thus incorporable in hyaluronic acid compositions in a stable manner. The hyaluronic acid-based compositions incorporating the aforesaid complexes are provided with antimicrobial activity and are usable effectively for promoting the healing of wounds, for the treatment of periodontal diseases, for intraarticular orthopaedic treatments, and as antimicrobial fillers in cosmetic surgery.
