The essay reflects on the role of conditionality to work in recent instruments of relief against poverty: s.c. “reddito di cittadinanza” and “reddito di emergenza”. It considers the maintenance and suspension of conditionality in a systematic perspective, evaluating favourable and contrary profiles and sketching a possible reform to overcome present limits of the connection between income support and possibilities of employment, in a context in which the pandemic caused a large increase of poverty.
