Alle radici del mito: figure dell'immaginario e regioni di confine nella trattatistica sui vampiri di matrice illuminista [At the roots of the myth: Imaginary's figures and border regions in enlightenment treatises about vampires]

This essay analyses the body of treatises in the 18th century regarding the problem of vampirism in Eastern Europe under the Habsburg Empire. The vampires approached in these works have marked descriptive characteristics, radically different from those which, in the following century, will constitute the literary material through which the theme of the vampire has been built. In this article, we try to analyse the relationship between famine, political and economic balances of border regions, and the building of the modern imaginary.

Il saggio prende in esame il corpus articolato dei trattati che nel XVIII secolo si interessano al problema del vampirismo nell’area di confine tra impero asburgico e impero ottomano. I vampiri descritti all’interno di questi testi di carattere prevalentemente medico-scientifico presentano caratteristiche radicalmente differenti da quelle che nel secolo seguente andranno a costituire il materiale letterario con cui elaborare il mito moderno del vampiro. Attraverso l’analisi del vampirismo settecentesco e delle sue specificità, questo contributo intende far emergere i rapporti complessi tra gestione politico-economica delle regioni di frontiera e la formazione dell’immaginario moderno.
