E se gli antropologi avessero qualcosa di intelligente (e di utile) da dire sul Covid-19?

During the months of lockdown in Italy several anthropological articles and essays have been written which focus on the ongoing pandemic. Some have been published on the web, thanks to portals such as "Doing Anthropology", observers such as "The right distance", atlases such as "Viral stories". Others have been promoted by national anthropology associations, as in the case of Anpia. The same presidents of SIAC, SIAA, SIMBDEA launched in March 2020 a joint working group with the aim of identifying possible answers on the one hand to the new needs created by the COVID emergency, on the other hand to the more deeply rooted issues, that the pandemic contributes to making it manifest or that it risks worsening in the near future. This literature has opened debates by denouncing how disease, today more than ever, proves to be a social, political, economic and symbolic phenomenon at the same time: a "total social fact" that anthropology has historically been used to describing and interpreting through proximity, immersion, in two words the ethnographic experience. Compared to this recent literature, negative criticisms have also arisen, produced by colleagues worried about a "word of mouth" which they consider excessive and, above all, dangerous where the discipline runs the risk, on behalf of this "presence" will, of a process of simplification and vulgarization of knowledge. While sharing this risk, the objective of this article is to show how and how much from this recent literature something new and, above all, useful emerges in order to "bring" anthropology out of the classrooms.

Durante i mesi di lockdown nel nostro Paese sono stati scritti diversi articoli e saggi antropologici che hanno come focus la pandemia in corso. Alcuni sono stati pubblicati sul web, grazie a portali quali «Fare Antropologia», osservatori come «La giusta distanza», atlanti quali «Storie virali». Altri sono stati promossi da associazioni nazionali di antropologia, come nel caso di Anpia. Gli stessi presidenti della SIAC, SIAA, SIMBDEA hanno avviato nel mese di marzo 2020 un tavolo di lavoro congiunto con la finalità di individuare possibili risposte da un lato ai nuovi bisogni creati dall’emergenza COVID, dall’altro alle questioni, ben più radicate, che la pandemia contribuisce a rendere manifeste o che rischia di acutizzare nel prossimo futuro. Tale letteratura ha aperto dibattiti denunciando come la malattia, oggi più che mai, mostra di essere fenomeno al contempo sociale, politico, economico e simbolico: un «fatto sociale totale» che l’antropologia è storicamente abituata a descrivere e interpretare attraverso la prossimità, l’immersione, in due parole l’esperienza etnografica. Rispetto a questa recente letteratura si sono sollevate anche critiche negative, prodotte da colleghi e colleghe preoccupati di una presa di parola da loro considerata eccessiva e, soprattutto, pericolosa laddove la disciplina corre il rischio, a nome di questa volontà presenzialista, di un processo di semplificazione e volgarizzazione del sapere. Pur condividendo questo rischio, l’obiettivo di questo articolo è mostrare come e quanto da questa recente letteratura emerga qualcosa di nuovo e, soprattutto, di utile al fine di far uscire l’antropologia dalle aule universitarie.
