In the framework of international relations with China, which the University of Basilicata has been cultivating for several years, the occasion for the assignment of a MAECI co-financing for exchanges of young students between Italy and China, has made possible the realization of two research and project workshops. In March 2019, two international workshops were held, in Fuzhou and Matera, entitled “Fujian Earth Castle - ZhuangZhai Research. Documentation, Protection, Renewal” and “To know and to build with tufo into the carved city”. Both organized and coordinated by Università degli Studi della Basilicata, Department of European and Mediterranean Cultures (DiCEM - Matera), with the support of Fuzhou University, School of Architecture. The workshops were made possible both thanks to the co-financing obtained following the participation in the MAECI “Youth Exchange”all, and to the support, also economic, of the Chinese partners. The Ministerial call for proposals included a mobility exchange for under 18 Italian and Chinese students and the project, with the scientific coordination of Prof. Arch. Antonio Conte, involved a wide group work, composed by students and researchers from the School of Architecture of Matera, from Università degli Studi di Ferrara and Politecnico Bari, as well as colleagues and students from the partner University in Fuzhou. The developed research and design themes, concerned fortified rammed earth architecture in Fujian focusing on the knowledge of the impressive zhuangzhai, castles in rammed earth, wood and stone, located mainly in the YongTai district. During the days of work on site, both in China and in Matera, students and tutors have ventured into experimentation with traditional and integrated surveying techniques, using tools such as drones and then3D laser scanner.
