The critical relevance of this essay by Ferdinando Bologna is illustrated in reconstructing the particular characteristics of its historical methodology and the cultural and political context within which the work was written. The text is re-read highlighting the value and limits, for us today, of its analysis, in light of the critique to which Bologna's work was subjected in his own time and later. In conclusion, to properly establish its status as a "classic of design history", this article reflects upon the relationship between criticism and ideology, and the apparent absence of ideological positions in contemporary design history and criticism.

L’attualità critica del saggio di Ferdinando Bologna viene illustrata ricostruendo le particolari caratteristiche della sua metodologia storica e il contesto culturale e politico in cui l’opera vede la luce. Il testo viene riletto e ripercorso mettendo in evidenza il valore e i limiti, per noi oggi, delle sue analisi, alla luce della critica a lui contemporanea e di quella successiva a cui l’opera di Bologna è stata sottoposta. In conclusione, per inquadrarne correttamente il carattere di “classico della storia del design”, si propone una riflessione sul rapporto tra critica e ideologia e sull’apparente assenza, nella storia e nella critica contemporanee del design, di posizioni ideologiche.
