Periodontitis is a complex chronic inflammatory disease of the tissues supporting the tooth. It causes the breakdown of connective tissue attachment and alveolar bone, and if left untreated, it may lead to tooth loss. In recent years, appropriateness has become a recognized element of health care system performance: available evidence and expert opinion must demonstrate that the expected benefits outweigh the expected harms. The appropriate nonsurgical treatment of periodontitis must maximize the inherent healing potential of the periodontal wound, minimizing iatrogenic trauma on dental and soft tissue—and consequently, intra- and posttreatment morbidity.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a complex chronic inflammatory disease of the tissues supporting the tooth. It causes the breakdown of connective tissue attachment and alveolar bone, and if left untreated, it may lead to tooth loss. In recent years, appropriateness has become a recognized element of health care system performance: available evidence and expert opinion must demonstrate that the expected benefits outweigh the expected harms. The appropriate nonsurgical treatment of periodontitis must maximize the inherent healing potential of the periodontal wound, minimizing iatrogenic trauma on dental and soft tissue—and consequently, intra- and posttreatment morbidity.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
