Abstract

The author examines the relationship of Hippocratic medicine with the sphere of the sacred and of religion. Hippocrates and the doctors of his circle were rationalists, and did not admit the direct influence of divinities in the processes of health and illness. They, however, were neither skeptical nor atheists, and scrupulously avoided any “collision” with traditional religion. At the same time, they came to identify the divine dimension with nature (physis).
