Religion and surgery in ancient Indian medicine [Religione e chirurgia nell'antica medicina indiana]

This article reconstructs, based on the 'Sushruta Samhita', included in 'Ayurveda' - that is in the system of traditional Indian medicine - the way in which Indian surgeons treated wounds produced by arrows. All the phases and techniques of the treatment are described. At the same time, the way in which Indian surgeons instructed their disciples is illustrated. The paper underlines the enormous importance that in Indian medicine, unlike Hippocratic medicine, had the ritual and religious factor.

L’articolo ricostruisce, sulla base del trattato Sushruta Samhita, compreso nell’Ayurveda, il sistema della medicina tradizionale indiana, il modo in cui i chirurghi indiani curavano le ferite prodotte dalle frecce. Vengono qui descritte tutte le fasi e le tecniche del trattamento. Al tempo stesso, viene illustrato il modo in cui i chirurghi indiani istruivano i loro discepoli. Si sottolinea l’enorme importanza che nella medicina indiana, diversamente dalla medicina ippocratica, aveva il fattore rituale e religioso.
