In this fourth chapter of the history of vegetarianism we speak of Pythagoras. It is Pythagoras, in fact, the real father of philosophical vegetarianism. First of all, the article exposes the information transmitted by the tradition on the life of the philosopher of Samos, also trying to suggest what could have been the influences he underwent. In this regard, the influence of Egyptian religious beliefs is certain; also that of Indian thought is possible. Later, the author illustrates the most characteristic aspects of the Pythagorean prohibition of consuming meat and of sacrificing animals.

In questo quarto capitolo della storia del vegetarianismo si parla di Pitagora. È Pitagora, infatti, il padre vero e proprio del vegetarianismo filosofico. Innanzitutto, l’articolo espone le informazioni trasmesse dalla tradizione sulla vita del filosofo di Samo, cercando anche di suggerire quali hanno potuto essere le influenze da lui subite. Al riguardo, è certa l’influenza delle convinzioni religiose egiziane; è possibile, inoltre, anche quella del pensiero indiano. In un secondo momento, l’autore illustra gli aspetti più caratteristici del divieto pitagorico di consumare carne e anche di sacrificare animali.
