Francesco Cardinali (1779-1837) was a brilliant personality in the Italian cultural environment of the first decades of nineteenth century. As mathematician, he wrote many works for educational use and he was teacher of mathematics in the Lyceum of Treviso for ten years. Besides it, Cardinali was an active editor of literary and scientific works. He supervised an edition of the Dizionario della lingua italiana (Bologna, 1819-26), together with Paolo Costa. Moreover, he was the editor of two editions of the collections on the motion of water, Raccolta d’autori che trattano del moto dell’acque, both printed in Bologna, the first one in 1821-26, the second one in 1823-45. In this work, we want to trace the biography of Cardinali, starting from the exam of his printed works and of some manuscripts by Cardinali himself, that are kept in different Italian libraries.
Francesco Cardinali (1779-1837) è stato una personalità di rilievo nel panorama culturale italiano dei primi decenni dell'Ottocento. Come matematico, fu autore di numerosi lavori di carattere didattico e professore di matematica al liceo di Treviso per dieci anni. Fu curatore di una edizione del "Dizionario della lingua italiana" (Bologna, 1819-26), insieme al letterato Paolo Costa. Inoltre fu editore di due edizioni della raccolta di autori sul moto delle acque, entrambe edite a Bologna, la prima negli anni 1821-26, la seconda tra il 1823 ed il 1845. Nel presente lavoro, si ricostruisce la biografia di Cardinali, a partire dall'esame delle sue opere a stampa e di alcuni manoscritti dello stesso Cardinali, conservati presso diverse biblioteche italiane.
