This article illustrates the birth of Greek (and Western) medicine as a rational practice. First of all, the author examines the social and cultural conditions that have favored in the fifth century B.C. the birth of the technai; subsequently, he takes into consideration the figure of Hippocrates of Cos, trying to distinguish the historical aspects from the legendary ones of the biographical tradition related to him.

L'articolo illustra la nascita della medicina greca e occidentale, in quanto pratica razionale, esaminando in particolare la figura di Ippocrate di Cos e cercando di distinguere gli aspetti storici da quelli leggendari della tradizione biografica a lui relativa.
