Alle origini del moderno abitare collettivo è il modello della insula roma la cui testimonianza più tangibile sono i resti rintracciabili ad Ostia. Un sistema innovativo nella struttura e nelle tecnologie costruttive, grazie all'uso dell'opus testaceum che direttametne espone la muratura laterizia in una autonomia figurativa avviando il nascente "Stile Laterizio".
