Through the centuries it has been a convent, a garrison, a fortress, a barrack, a school... and a ruin: this is the story of the architectural complex of SS. Mauro and Augustine, considered as one of the historical and generating polarities of the lagoon city of Comacchio (Ferrara_Italy) where, today, the ruins have not become a romantic relic, but they are merely an expression of carelessness and negligence. The complex is located in one of the oldest and most neglected areas of the city so the first task of creating a new function of the area has also the meaning to put together two parts of the city that are conceptually distant. The most suitable and compatible inclination for the site appeared to be to the cultural center, specifically a middle school, as it is seen as a potential place of knowledge, when you can learn, grow, evolve and remember. The future can have an ancient heart: that of a school aiming at progress, but treasuring the past experiences. A study on the site has been done, by consulting metric measurements, photos and a survey of the historical and archival documentation. It was an essential starting point to pursue a use that would grant the return of an architectural organism, through the preservation of its pre-existing values. The project has come out from the wish to interact with the geometry of the building, without altering the original form, but, on the contrary, using and adapting it to the new intervention
