The mcr-1 plasmid-mediated colistin resistance is a great clinical concern. Until now detected only in Enterobacteriaceae isolates from infected subjects, its diffusion in the hospital environment is unknown. Here, we detected mcr-1-driven resistance in 8.3% of Enterobacteriaceae isolated from Italian hospital surfaces, potentially representing a reservoir of threatening nosocomial pathogens.

Abstract

The mcr-1 plasmid-mediated colistin resistance is a great clinical concern. Until now detected only in Enterobacteriaceae isolates from infected subjects, its diffusion in the hospital environment is unknown. Here, we detected mcr-1-driven resistance in 8.3% of Enterobacteriaceae isolated from Italian hospital surfaces, potentially representing a reservoir of threatening nosocomial pathogens.
