ZeoLIFE tested an innovative zeolitites cycle to reduce the use of N fertilizers and irrigation water, and to protect water resources from N pollution and excessive exploitation by agricultural activities. Zeolitites are rocks containing > 50% of zeolites, minerals with high CEC and reversible dehydration. They capture NH4+ from solutions and release it gradually to the crops, preventing N leaching into the water system. In three years of open field experimentation, the use of NH4–enriched and natural zeolitite lead to a 17–43% of N reduction in porewater and 7–30% in the surface water, as well as a reduction on CO2 emission (–1654 ton) and an increase in the Ecological Balance (+494 gha).
